Nikon D780 – Who should Buy?

Nikon D780 vs Z6 - Who Should Buy

Finally, Nikon D780  is on sale now at Rs.1,64,990/- ( Check Today’s Price ). The wait for D780 has been painful for Nikon D750 fans as Nikon took more than 5 years to bring a worthy upgrade to the Nikon D7XX series.

Take a look at the launch dates below

  • Nikon D700 launched on 02-July-2008
  • Nikon D750 launched on 12-Sept-2014
  • Nikon D780 launched on 7-Jan-2020

So we can say that Nikon takes around 5 to 6 years to introduce an upgrade in Nikon. The time taken to launch D780 should not surprise me at all.

Although there have been new launches in other series including the most important launch of the decade, the full-frame mirrorless Z camera line-up. The Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless camera and lenses journey started with the launch Nikon Z6 and Z7 in 16-Nov-2018.

The Nikon Z6/Z7 had everyone excited with some much-awaited features and performance attributes that brought Nikon back into the game.

Many photographers thought this might be the end of the road for the D7XX series. Even if it was not they moved to the mirrorless world.

Nikon not only launched Z cameras and some lenses but also the timeline of other lenses for Z-mount. Clearly, Nikon is now serious about mirrorless technology.

Fast forward from Nov 2018 to Jan 2020, almost 1 year later, Nikon D780 was launched which is a clear hybrid camera. A camera with awesome specs everyone wants to take to the field.

The D780 is a DSLR which is a combination of the best D750 and Z6 cameras. There cannot be a better contender for still awesome D750.

Now the golden question is D780 is a brilliant DSLR so the question arises if you should buy D780 or who should buy Nikon D780.

Who Should Buy Nikon D780?

This is a very capable camera for wedding photography even today. But the world is moving toward a mirrorless world. The sale of mirrorless cameras has been on the rise in the last 3 years. All the camera manufacturers are spending a major chunk of their R&D budget on mirrorless technology.

If you go and read again. I said, “D780 is a brilliant DSLR”. It is a DSLR and not a mirrorless camera. Honestly, the future of DSLRs in the next 5 years ( expected next upgrade of D7xx ) is not bright. In fact, the future of DSLRs is not a future.

If you buy D780 today, most probably you will be using it for at least 2 years. In a way, you are delaying your moving into mirrorless technology.

So you need to make a conscious and informed decision of buying a new DSLR in 2021.

Let’s make it simple for you

  1. If you are tight on budget, go and buy D780. Buying a mirrorless means selling all your existing gear including lenses, flashes, triggers, etc. It will be an expensive switchover.
  2. If you have been thinking of moving to mirrorless for the last few months. Also, you have been saving substantial money to invest in new mirrorless cameras and lenses. It is worth waiting or ditching D780.

Using Adaptor for F-mount lenses

I know a lot of you might be thinking, why buy new S-series lenses for Z6/Z7? Just use an adaptor for the existing lineup of F-mount lenses.

Nikon sent me a test Z6 camera and adaptor in early 2019. I tried using F-mount lenses. Honestly, they were not at par with Z-mount lenses. The autofocus and balance were satisfactory.

Even if I have to be generous, I can still say you use an adaptor for still photography but for videos it was bad.

Sony was doing this adaptor game in 2012/13. We are in [] and using adaptors is just not acceptable and is like going back 2-generations.

Planning to sell everything and buying a Z6/Z7 camera?

I have an interesting question that I have asked in my video as well. If you are selling all your existing Nikon gear, would you still want to be with Nikon or would consider other brands like Sony and Canon mirrorless gear? 🙂

I know everyone has their own reasons when they buy new gear. What are your reasons for this case?
